Outgrown (WIP)

Overgrown is a 2-minute personal film about a story following the pov of a ordinary girl. The concept is a slice-of-life-turned-fantastical journey that covers a variety of daily struggles: the fight for a better future, the drive to stay creative, and the validation of success.

The project is in collaboration with Rosa Chen and Tianai Guo (composer). The film will be featured in late April, 2025.

PROCESS

Visual Reference & Story Idea

Early Character Design

We decided the girl to be in 2D and based of a regular Chinese middle school students in their uniform to refer to our heritage
The plant is designed in 3D but used a 2D toon shader in redshift to keep consistent with the girl. We ran a few iterations in the colors and shader tests (and we changed it again during the final production :))
