The project is the opening to the show “Pressing On: The Letterpress Film”. The film celebrates the 500-year-old printing technique that was essential to communication in human history, but it also raises the question of the future of these printing press in a digital age. Letterpress has became a important part of my design practices, so I weave my understanding and love of letterpress to this opening project.Tool: After Effects, Cinema 4D, Procreate
Role: Design, Animation
PROCESS
I started by creating the illustration of the printing press in Procreate for inspiration. They are the iconic features on the machines, so I showcased them in the opening. The illustration was in the style of linocut printing which is usually used in letterpess printing.
Stoyboard
Production
I used Cinema 4D to create the metal type and flipping page in the beginning of the film. I learned simulation in C4D for the metal type falling animation.
I took the clip from the documentary, added texture in After Effects, exported them frame-by-frame,
and recolored them in Photoshop.
