Quimby’s Bookstore

The project is the rebranding of Quimby’s Bookstore, an indie comic store based in Chicago that supports the local and under-represented of artists of different genders and races to celebrate their works and make a profitTool:     Illustrator, Photoshop

PROCESS

The project started with a research and adventure in-store at Quimby's. I thought the most unique aspect of this bookstore is how it celebrated the sub-cultures, and the vibe of the store is pretty quirky.

And then I sketched out a lot of different iterations. Finally we landed on using two parenthesis and one reverse comma making a uppercase Q, alluding that the mark is for a bookstore and apprecating the quirkiness of its name.

During this process, I couldn't find a typeface to reflect on Quimby's countercultral and rebellious nature and show that it is a comic store. So I manipulated an existing typeface that is the closest to what I was looking for, Serif Gothic by Herb Lubalin. I made the serif to stand out more and make it more comic-like.
